What is an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker?

When should you see an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker?
An Accredited Mental Health Social Worker can help you when you experience difficulties that impact on your ability to manage the demands of day to day life. For example, when you persistently experience low mood, have a relationship breakdown, experience family, friend or workplace conflict, feel isolated and lonely and having difficulties making decisions, are diagnosed with or suspect you have a mental health disorder.

What can an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker do?
Accredited Mental Health Social Workers understand mental health issues and disorders. They have training, skills and expertise to assess your situation and to offer effective treatment.

How much will it cost?
If you are referred by your GP, paediatrician or psychiatrist to have counselling with an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker you are eligible for a Medicare rebate. You will need to book an appointment with your GP to discuss. Any additional charges will be discussed when you make your first appointment with Jervis Bay Counselling Services.

How do I receive a Medicare rebate?
• Make an appointment with your GP
• Request a mental health plan and a referral letter to see a Counsellor at Jervis Bay Counselling Services.

Self Referrals
If you are not eligible for a Medicare rebate, you can simply self refer for counselling. As this is a private practice, fees are charged for counselling services. The fee will be discussed when you make an appointment. Payment is required on the day of service and an EFTPOS machine is available.

How long is a session?
A session is usually 50 minutes.

How many sessions are needed?
This can vary on the complexity of the situation and the client’s needs. Some people attend for a couple of sessions however the average amount of sessions is 6 – 8 with a review after the fourth session to make sure you are progressing.

Will my information be kept confidential?
Yes. Accredited Mental Health Social Workers are bound by a code of ethics which includes maintaining confidentiality. This will be explained further at your first appointment.
